What is the roster limit in college soccer?

The Division I Manual sets a roster limit of 28 for men’s soccer and 28 for women’s soccer (Bylaw 17.2). It applies to a Division I school that is a member of a conference named in the House settlement, or that has opted in to it. Other Division I schools are not bound by it.

A school may carry a designated student-athlete above the limit. The manual defines one as a player the school attests was, or would have been, removed from its roster because of the new limits, and who was on the squad or had been recruited or promised a place before the limits arrived (Bylaws 17.02.8 and 17.2.2).

We found no roster limit for soccer in the Division II Manual, the Division III Manual or the NAIA Handbook. At those levels the number is the coach’s and the school’s choice.

Among players whose class year the roster lists.

Seniors and graduate students are the places that open next year. Read a target program’s roster by class and by position before you write: what coaches look for shows how squads split by position.

Why does roster size matter to a recruit?

A roster’s size tells you how many places exist. Its class years tell you how many open in your year. Its positions tell you whether one of them is yours. A program with a small squad and three seniors at your position has more room for you than a famous one with a full squad of sophomores.

A large roster is not the same as playing time. Ask a coach how many players travel and how many played in most matches: see questions to ask college soccer coaches.

Q&AQuick answers

Quick answers

How many players are on a college soccer team?
The middle roster lists 29 players in 2026-27. Half of all rosters list between 26 to 33.
How many players are on a D1 soccer roster?
The middle Division I roster lists 28 players for women and 28 for men. The Division I roster limit is 28 at schools in the House settlement (Bylaw 17.2).
Is there a roster limit in D3 soccer?
We found none in the Division III Manual. A Division III coach and school choose the size of the squad.
Why do some Division I teams list more than 28 players?
The limit binds only schools that are part of the House settlement, and those schools may keep designated student-athletes above it. A school’s web roster is also not the roster it submits to the NCAA.

How this was counted

Roster size is the number of players a school lists on its own roster page, on rosters whose page confirms the 2026-27 season: 2,194 of our 2,215 programs. Rosters showing an earlier season are left out. Class years are as the roster lists them.
