The two girls’ national leagues
ECNL vs Girls Academy: what is the difference?
The short answer
ECNL Girls and the Girls Academy (GA) are the two national top-level leagues in girls’ club soccer. They are separate: our directory lists 133 ECNL Girls clubs and 121 Girls Academy clubs, and no club holds a place in both. Each has a second level under it, the ECNL Regional League and GA Aspire. Neither league is required for college soccer, and we do not rank one above the other.

The Girls Academy’s own description: over 120 member clubs in eleven conferences, with teams at U13, U14, U15, U16, U17 and U19; league play begins in August and ends with playoffs and national finals in June and July (About the Girls Academy (2025/26 season)). The ECNL’s site lists its competitions and clubs and prints no count of its own that we could read, so the ECNL figures here are ours.

A state’s name links to every club in that state, in every league.
This is the comparison that matters to a family, because nobody chooses a league in the abstract. You choose between the clubs you can drive to, and the table shows how much that differs from state to state.
What sits under each league?
Under ECNL Girls is the ECNL Regional League, with 411 clubs in our directory. Under the Girls Academy is GA Aspire, which the league describes as a tier two league where clubs must apply and meet specific criteria for acceptance; it has 148 clubs in our directory.
The whole ladder is in girls’ club soccer levels.
Is ECNL or GA better for college recruiting?
No rule favors either. The NCAA and NAIA manuals name no youth league, and the NCAA defines a coach’s evaluation as the observation of a player taking part in any practice or competition at any site (Bylaw 13.02.7). The Girls Academy describes regional and national showcase events throughout the year in its season.
A league puts a team in front of coaches. It does not put one player on one coach’s list. That takes a list of colleges that fit, video and an email, whichever league the video was filmed in: how to email college soccer coaches.
How should a family choose between an ECNL club and a GA club?
- List the clubs of both leagues within the drive you can live with.
- Watch each club’s team in your daughter’s age group train and play.
- Ask each club where she would play: first team or second, starting or not.
- Ask for the whole year’s cost, travel included.
- Ask the coach which college coaches they have spoken to this year about their players.

How this was counted
Club counts are our club directory, built on 2026-10-05 from each league’s own published club list. A club is one name in one state. What the Girls Academy says about itself is quoted from its own site, read on 2026-10-05.
