Eligibility

What GPA do you need to play college soccer?

The short answer

To play as a freshman you need a 2.3 GPA in 16 NCAA core courses for Division I and a 2.2 for Division II. The NAIA asks for a 2.300 overall, or two of three other measures. Division III has no national minimum, and every one of these is a floor for eligibility: getting admitted is a separate decision, made by the college.

What GPA do you need to play D1 soccer?

A minimum 2.3 GPA in your 16 NCAA core courses (Division I academic standards). The core-course GPA is not the GPA on your report card: it counts only courses on your high school’s NCAA-approved list.

The 16 courses are four years of English, three of math (Algebra I or higher), two of science, one more of English, math or science, two of social science, and four more from any of those or from world language, comparative religion or philosophy.

Division I also has a timing rule. You must finish 10 of the 16 core courses, seven of them in English, math or science, before the seventh semester. A player who leaves the hard courses for senior year can miss it.

What GPA do you need to play D2 soccer?

A minimum 2.2 GPA in 16 core courses (Division II academic standards): three years of English, two of math (Algebra I or higher), two of science, three more of English, math or science, two of social science, and four more from any of those or from world language, comparative religion or philosophy.

A player who falls short is a partial qualifier, who may practice and receive an athletics scholarship, but may not compete in the first year (Division II academic certification decisions).

What about D3 and NAIA soccer?

Division III has no national academic minimum for athletes. Each college sets its own standards and certifies its own players. The NCAA Eligibility Center is involved only for international players, whose amateur status it certifies.

The NAIA makes an entering freshman eligible with a high school GPA of 2.300 or higher. Below that, a player needs two of three: a score of 18 on the ACT or 970 on the SAT, a GPA of at least 2.000, or a final class rank in the upper half of the graduating class (Article V, Section C). NAIA players are cleared by the NAIA Eligibility Center.

Do you need the SAT or ACT to play college soccer?

For NCAA eligibility, test scores are not required: Divisions I and II removed standardized test scores from initial eligibility in January 2023. A college’s admissions office may still ask for them, and a score can still earn academic aid, so check each college on your list.

In the NAIA a test score is one of the three measures a player below a 2.300 can use.

When should you register with the Eligibility Center?

The NCAA’s guide says to register before ninth grade, starting with a Profile Page account. A player being recruited by a Division I or II school needs an Academic and Athletics Certification account, which is needed to take a Division I official visit, to sign an athletics aid agreement and to compete. The guide’s own checklist, year by year:

  1. Ninth grade. Open a Profile Page account, find your high school’s list of NCAA-approved core courses, and tell your counselor you plan to play in college.
  2. Tenth grade. If a Division I or II school is recruiting you, move to a certification account. Ask the counselor to upload your transcript at the end of the year.
  3. Eleventh grade. Check you are on track for the core courses, share your NCAA ID with the schools recruiting you, and have the transcript uploaded again at the end of the year.
  4. Twelfth grade. Finish the core courses, ask for your final athletics certification from April 1 if you enroll in the fall, and have the final transcript with proof of graduation uploaded.

Is the minimum GPA enough to get recruited?

No. Eligibility is the association’s floor. Admission is the college’s own decision and a separate one: a coach’s interest does not replace the admissions office’s yes. Check each college’s admissions requirements early; the NCAA’s checklist puts that in tenth grade.
