How to make a soccer highlight video for college coaches

The short answer

Keep it to a few minutes, put your best clips first, and mark yourself before each one. Show the actions your position is judged on, against the best opponents you have film of, and include the build-up, not only the finish. Host it at a link that opens without a login, and keep one full game ready for the coach who asks.

This is our advice for making a coach’s job easy. No governing body sets rules for highlight videos.

What is a highlight video for?

It has one job: to get a coach to want to see more. It does not need to prove you are the best player on the field. It needs to show, quickly and honestly, that you can do the things your position demands at the speed of a good game.

It travels with your first email and sits on your profile. If a coach likes it, the next step may be a request for a full game or a look at you in person.

How do you put a highlight video together?

  1. Collect film all season. Ask your club who films games, or set up a camera high and near halfway. Wide film that shows the whole play is more useful than a close-up.
  2. Pick clips by position. Use the table below. Choose actions against strong opponents.
  3. Open with a title card: name, graduation year, position, club and team, height, your email and phone, your coach’s contact.
  4. Put the best clips first. Do not save anything for the end.
  5. Mark yourself with an arrow or a circle before each clip starts, then let the play run.
  6. Leave the play whole. Start a few seconds before your action and end a few seconds after.
  7. Skip the effects. No slow motion on every clip, no long intro. Music is optional.
  8. Upload it somewhere open and test the link on a phone that is not logged in.

What should the video show for each position?

Clips to look for, by position
PositionShow this
GoalkeeperSaves low and high to both sides, crosses claimed in traffic, one-against-ones, distribution with feet and hands, organising the back line
Center backDefending one against one, winning headers, stepping in to intercept, passing forward under pressure, covering a teammate
Outside backDefending the winger, recovery runs, overlapping, crosses and cut-backs, playing out when pressed
Defensive midfielderReceiving on the half-turn, switching play, breaking up attacks, protecting the back line
Attacking midfielderFinding space between lines, the final pass, shots from distance, pressing after losing the ball
WingerBeating a defender on either side, crosses, runs in behind, tracking back
ForwardFinishing with both feet and head, movement to get free, holding the ball up, pressing defenders

Goalkeepers need more than clips: see goalkeeper recruiting.

Do coaches want full-game film too?

Have it ready. Highlights show what you can do; a full game shows what you do most of the time: your positioning, your work without the ball, how you react to a mistake. Keep one or two recent full games at a link, say which number and color you are wearing, and offer them in your email.

How often should you update it?

After each season, or sooner when you have clearly better film. A new video is also the best reason to write to a coach again: see how to follow up. A coach who sees you at an ID camp or a showcase may go back to your video afterwards, so keep the link the same and replace what it points to.

Q&AQuick answers

Quick answers

How long should a soccer highlight video be?
A few minutes. Enough clips to show your range at your position, with the strongest first. A coach who wants more will ask for a full game.
What should be at the start of a soccer highlight video?
A title card with your name, graduation year, position, club and team, height and contact details, then your best clip. Do not open with a long intro.
Do you need a professional to make a highlight video?
No. Clear, steady, wide film and simple editing are enough. What matters is the choice of clips and that the coach can tell which player is you.
Should a highlight video have music?
It does not need it. A coach may well watch with the sound off. If you add music, keep it quiet and clean.
Where should you upload a soccer highlight video?
Anywhere that gives you a link which opens on a phone without a login or a download. Test it from a device that is not signed in before you send it.
