Olympic Development Program
What is ODP soccer, and how do tryouts work?
The short answer
ODP is US Youth Soccer’s Olympic Development Program. A player enters through a local state association: they try out for their state’s ODP team, and the best go on to regional camps, an interregional event and a national select team. US Youth Soccer calls it a supplemental development opportunity for the top club soccer players in the country, so it runs beside a player’s club, not instead of it. Each state association sets its own tryout dates and fees: all 53 pages we could load are linked below.

How does the ODP pathway work?
- State team. Players try out for their state’s ODP team and train with it through the year.
- Summer ID camps. State players go to ODP summer camps, where regional coaches evaluate them and name a roster for each region.
- Interregional. The regional teams (East, Midwest, South and West) play each other in front of national coaches, scouts and college staff.
- National select team. National coaches draw on the regional teams to form a team that travels for international competition.
That is US Youth Soccer’s own description of the pathway (The ODP pathway). Every player enters the same way and earns a place at each stage.
How do ODP tryouts work, and when are they?
Each state association runs its own tryouts, sets its own dates and age groups, and charges its own fees. They differ from state to state, so we do not print them. Go to your state association’s ODP page, below, and register there.
- Register with your own state association.
- Check which age groups your state runs this year.
- Ask what the whole cycle costs, not only the tryout: training weekends, the summer camp and travel are separate.
- Tell your club coach. ODP dates can clash with club events.

Is ODP worth it for college recruiting?
ODP is one more place to be seen, and US Youth Soccer says its interregional events are played in front of national coaches, scouts and college staff. It is not a league and it is not required by any college rule: the NCAA and NAIA manuals do not mention it.
Weigh it like any other cost in the recruiting year. If the state pool trains near you and the fee is modest, it is extra coaching and extra matches. If it means long drives and missed club games, the same money may do more at one ID camp run by a college on your list. Either way the college list, the video and the email still have to be done: how to get recruited for college soccer.
Quick answers
- What does ODP stand for in soccer?
- Olympic Development Program. It is run by US Youth Soccer through its state associations.
- How do you get into ODP?
- Through a local state association: you register with your state association and try out for the state ODP team.
- When are ODP tryouts?
- Each state association sets its own dates. Your state association’s ODP page has this year’s.
- How much does ODP cost?
- Each state association sets its own fees, for the tryout and for the training cycle. We do not print them; your state association’s ODP page has them.
- Is ODP better than ECNL or MLS NEXT?
- They are different things. ECNL and MLS NEXT are club leagues a team plays in all season. ODP is, in US Youth Soccer’s words, a supplemental development opportunity for the top club soccer players in the country, alongside a player’s club.
How this was counted
The pathway is US Youth Soccer’s own description, read on 2026-10-05. The state list is the 54 state programs we hold; each state’s link was requested on 2026-10-06 and is printed only if the page loaded. We print no tryout dates or fees.
