Starting late

Is it too late to get recruited for college soccer?

The short answer

Usually not. The first signing date is November 11, 2026, but it is a first date, not a deadline, and programs with room keep recruiting after it. Of the 2,215 college programs, 1,653 are outside Division I. A junior or senior who writes to the right programs now still has options; what has passed is the early Division I cycle at the top programs.

Is junior year too late?

No. Junior year is when Division I visits and off-campus contact open (August 1 before junior year (Bylaw 13.1.1.1)), so a junior is on time for most of what matters. What a junior has less of is time to be seen, so do the first three steps in the same month: list, video, email.

Aim the list across levels, not only at the top of Division I. The free target list does that scoring for you.

Is senior year too late?

It is late for the programs that finished their class a year ago, and it is not late for the game as a whole. A senior should assume the most selective Division I programs are done, and spend the effort where a place can still exist.

  • Division III and NAIA programs. Together they are more than half of college soccer, and their coaches can talk to a senior freely.
  • Division II programs. A Division II coach may hold one tryout per recruit at each school (Bylaw 13.8.2.1(a)), which lets a late player be judged in person.
  • NAIA programs. They may hold tryouts of up to two days (Article II, Section C).
  • Walking on. Ask the coach directly whether the program takes walk-ons: see tryouts and walk-ons.

How much room does a college roster have for new players?

Every roster turns over. This table shows what share of the players on current rosters are freshmen: the size of the door, counted from 66,356 players on 2,193 rosters this season.

Share of players whose class year the roster lists. A freshman on the roster was recruited or walked on in the past year.

What it does not show is which programs still have a place this year. For that, look at a program’s own roster: how many seniors it is about to lose at your position. Each program page lays the squad out by class year.

What should a late starter do this month?

  1. Make a list of programs that fit your level and grades, at more than one division.
  2. Cut a short highlight video from the film you have. Good enough and sent beats perfect and late.
  3. Send the first email to every program on the list this week, and say plainly that you are a junior or a senior still looking.
  4. Ask each coach one direct question: are you still recruiting my position for my graduation year?
  5. Go to an ID camp or ask about a tryout at the programs that answer.
  6. Apply to the colleges on the list on the normal admissions timetable. A coach cannot add a player the college has not admitted.

What if no four-year program has a place?

Two routes stay open. One is to enroll, play club or train, and try to join the team as a walk-on. The other is to start at one college and move: at least 67% of the programs we can judge have a player who arrived from another college, and the transfer portal guide explains how that works.

Q&AQuick answers

Quick answers

Is it too late to get recruited as a senior?
Not everywhere. The most selective Division I programs have usually finished, but many Division II, Division III and NAIA programs still have room for the right player. Write to them now and ask directly whether they are still recruiting your position.
Is junior year too late to start the recruiting process?
No. Division I off-campus contact and official visits only open on August 1 before junior year, so a junior who starts now is on time for most programs.
Can you get recruited after signing day?
Yes. November 11, 2026 is the first day a recruit may sign with a Division I or II program in 2026-27, not the last. Programs with places left keep recruiting after it.
What is the fastest way to be seen late in the process?
A direct email with video to the coaches of programs that fit, followed by that school’s ID camp or, in Division II and the NAIA, a tryout. Waiting for a showcase costs months.
Can you join a college soccer team without being recruited?
Sometimes, as a walk-on. It depends on the program. Ask the coach before you enroll whether walk-ons are taken and how they are chosen.

How this was counted

Freshman share: players listed as freshmen divided by players whose class year is listed, on rosters confirmed as the 2026-27 squad. The transfer figure is a floor: it counts only programs where a roster names a player’s previous college.
